Local TU Chapter Receives Statewide Award

Penns Creek Chapter Selected as 2005 "Best Chapter in PA"

September 25, 2005 -- The Penns Creek Chapter of Trout Unlimited was recently selected as recipients of the Edward J. Urbas Memorial Award as the 2005 "Best Chapter in PA" at the PA Council of Trout Unlimited Fall Membership conference.  The Penns Creek Chapter's mission is to conserve, protect, and restore local coldwater  fisheries and their watersheds. The Penns Creek Chapter of Trout Unlimited is responsible for Mifflin, Juniata, Snyder, and part of Huntingdon Counties.

The Penns Creek Chapter is very active in conservation, youth and adult environmental education, and trout habitat improvement projects on local waterways.  2005 activities include:

  • Long-term Strategic Planning
  • Sponsoring a DEP Growing Greener Grant for a Watershed Assessment of Lower Kishacoquillas Creek in Mifflin County
  • Completing a Trout Habitat Improvement Project with PA Fish Commision on Tea Creek, Reedsville PA
  • Securing a Delayed Harvest Artificial Lures Only designation for a section of Upper Honey Creek, Mifflin County
  • Performing stream cleanups on Kish Creek, Tea Creek, and Penns Creek
  • Investigating, monitoring, and reporting environmental threats to several local streams
  • Conducting Boy Scout Flyfishing Merit Badge Classes at the Seven Mountains Boy Scout Camp
  • Participating with two stations at the Shade Mountain Chapter of Wild Turkey Federation Youth Field Day
  • Providing in-school conservation programming for elementary school students
  • Working with various youth groups and individual Boy Scout Troops on Fly Tying and Fly Casting
  • Partnering with DCNR at Poe Paddy State Park to provide a "Green Drake" entomology seminar for both adults and youth
  • Sponsoring a local youth to attend the River's Conservation Youth Camp sponsored by PA Trout Unlimited
  • Presenting a "Flyfishing for Trout Seminar Series" Fall 2005 through Spring 2006 open to public attendance
  • Providing monetary support to qualified local / regional conservation organizations.
